"What gave me away?" Kevin asked Sarah, a grin still on his face. "The thick californian accent, the hawaiian shirt, and the sandals." Sarah answered casually, giving a slight shrug as she did. "You're a smart kid, and yes I do enjoy surfing." Kevin admitted. "Anyways what are you dudes learning currently from old Ms.Hans?" Kevin asked. "I am not old Mr. Kevin" Ms. Hans commented sharply from her desk. "Right, sorry Ms. H" Kevin apologized, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. "Anyways what have you kids done to learn about science? What activities have you done lately?" Kevin asked.
There was a couple moments of silence before Varick decided to raise his hand. "Yeah, you, blondie" Kevin said, pointing at Varick. "We usually take notes and listen to Ms. Hans' lectures" Varick answered, attempting to stifle a yawn. A frown began to surface the tan mans face "Do you enjoy listening to the lectures and taking notes?" Kevin asked. The only response Kevin's question received was a few murmurs and shrugs from the students. "Okay, let me ask again. Raise your hand if you enjoy listening to lectures and taking notes. And be honest with me dudes." Kevin said hopefully. It took a few moments for Kevin to figure out that Sarah was the only one who enjoyed the lectures and note taking. "Okay" Kevin said slightly awkward "Raise your hand if you'd rather be doing a more enjoyable activity." And just like that the rest of the classes hands quickly shot up into the air. "Alright" Kevin said, a grin once again appearing on his face. "Guess I know what I'm working with. I'll give you two options for learning this week. If you're a dude that wants to do a more hands on activity you can come with me to the lab room. And if you want to stay here and listen to Ms, Hans' lecture by all means stay." Kevin said, still keeping a smile on his face. And just like that almost all of the students were following him to the lab room. The only one who actually wanted to stay behind was Sarah. Sarah looked up from the book she was currently reading. She made eye contact with Kevin, and Kevin looked back at her in a calculating way. As if the concept of her staying her to listen to a lecture boggled his mind. But after a minute he nodded his head at her and left. It was short, silent walk on the way to the science laboratory. As the children passed with every step they were only met with the empty, white walls of the school. There were no windows to shine light or any pictures to show signs of life ever inhabited it. Alan Rickus Middleschool never had a reputation for showing color or excitement. All that could be heard were the children's footsteps against the linoleum floors. "Man" Kevin commented in amazement "For a bunch of middle schoolers you dudes are quiet. The last school I student taught at had a class that was so loud and obnoxious they weren't allowed in the hallways." Kevin joked, chuckling awkwardly by himself. "Aw come on not even a chuckle?" Kevin said, a pleading smile appearing on his once smiling face. "You guys may be tougher than I thought." He said, sighing exasperatingly. "Anyways" he began, clearing his throat "I heard from old Ms. Hans that you dudes were learning about volcanoes. To me that sounds like a pretty righteous subject. So I thought it might be interesting to show you what volcanic eruption looks like with a more hands on experience.". This earned a few curious and confused looks from Varick, Darce, and the rest of the students. They followed Kevin as he opened the door to the otherwise bright and sterilized science lab. As they entered Darce and Varick were met with a sight that surprised them both greatly. To be continued.......
