To his mother Darce had always been a disappointment. From the moment he was born Mrs. Grimm had never shown Darce that she cared about him even slightly. No matter how hard he tried to be who she wanted him to be it was never enough. At this point all he could do is let her scold him and pick himself up when he was gone. "Yeah, I know." Darce replied bitterly to his mother "I'm sorry mom." he said sadly.
"Varick" Mrs. Brenna began to her son. "Are you alright? You look very warm." She commented as she examined his face herself. Unlike his father, Varick's mother was more caring to her two children. And she did her best to make up for all the care Mr. Brenna could not give them. "I'm okay mom" Varick finally said "I just feel a little hot." he said, wiping the sweat from his forehead. Varick felt a pang of guilt in his chest, he didn't want to lie to his mother. One of few people who actually cared about him. But he didn't know what else to do. And lying seemed like the only sensible option. "Ok" Mrs. Brenna finally said, smiling caringly. "Well I'm here to take you home. Your father had to work late because of his employee inspection. Come on let's go to the car." She finally said, ushering him to the school's entrance. "Have a nice rest of your day Mrs. Grimm." Mrs. Brenna said just before exiting the school. "Hope Darce feels better." She wished. Mrs. Brenna's kind words only earned a sharp glare from Mrs. Grimm. "He'll be fine Mrs. Brenna." Mrs. Grimm said through gritted teeth. "You worry about caring for your own child." she coldly commented. Only to earn a concerned look from Mrs. Brenna as she exited the school. The Brenna's exited the school, leaving Darce alone with his mother. "Go to the car." Mrs. Grimm stated in a deep, venomous voice. Not wanting to make the woman any angrier, he did as she said. He walked slowly to the long, black, limousine. His mother ushering him in with the sharp flick of the wrist towards the one of the cars ajar doors. Darce sat uncomfortably on the black leather seats. His breathing becoming more and more rapid. His mother took the seat across from him, her signature glare still plastered on her face. "I had an important meeting today, Darcey." uttered Mrs. Grimm. Darce twitched at the mention of his full name. "Your father and I were finally going to have the father of that friend yours fired. But thanks to you I won't be able to witness his downfall." She added, her teeth becoming more and more gritted. She took an aggravated drag from the long cigarette in her hand. "When we get home I want you to go to your room and think about what you have done to me. I will call you down when dinner is ready. And then you will be able to speak about what you have done with both me and your father." She ended, taking another puff from the cigarette. "Do you understand me?" She added. Darce didn't say anything, which only set his mother off even more. "I said" she said quietly "do...you...understand...me!" She asked again, her voice raising higher. Darce finally nodded his head, only to get his mother to quiet down. A smirk spread across Mrs. Grimms face. A smirk that only appears when she knows she got her way. "Good" She hissed, taking a third puff from her cigarette. Darce couldn't decide if it was the thought of talking to both his parents. Or the smell of his mothers secondhand smoke that was making his stomach upset. After a few heated minutes the limo finally pulled into the driveway of Grimm manor. The Grimm family lived in a rather large mansion at the edge of town. The mansion looked as gothic and dead as the family that lived in it. The manor had a decorative, black, steel fence that wrapped around its grounds. To prevent any intruders the fence had an access code that only few people knew. His parents had so little trust that not even Darce knew the code. And on inside the fence was a large, beautiful, garden. With well-kept topiaries and colorful flowers scattered about the grounds. The garden was kept in this perfect condition by the Grimm's gardener Victor Manolo. He was one the few people who had access to the fence around the Grimm family's estate. Manolo was a tall, thin, man. Who had pale skin despite his constant exposure to the sun. He had gray, thinning hair that was usually covered by a sunhat. Manolo was one of the few people at the manor Darce that could actually stand. Darce had grown fond of the man's interest in the Grimm family garden. When the rest of his family was busy at the manor doing who knows what. Darce would usually be out in the garden talking to him. Letting Manolo share his knowledge of plants with him. "Hello there, Darce." Manolo greeted as Darce walked towards the door of the mansion. Only for his greeting to be returned by Darce's polite, yet sad wave back. "Hello to you too, Mrs. Grimm." Manolo added with a smile. "Just do the gardening, Manolo!" Mrs. Grimm snapped, slamming the door in anger. To be continued.........

Upon collision the watery orb transformed into steam, releasing Darce back into reality. Tears were still falling from his onyx, black eyes. Those tears soon dried after realization engulfed Darce's mind. This insane, mixed up situation caused Darce to sink to the ground. Rocking himself back and forth and muttering quietly to himself. "This can't be real" he said, "this has to be dream. I must be dreaming". This was it, Darce thought. After everything the worlds done to him, it was all going to drive him into insanity.
He was once again brought back to reality by Varick shaking him by the shoulders. "Dude" Varick said to him seriously. "You have to calm down. Sitting on the floor and talking to yourself isn't going to help the situation." Thinking about what Varick just said to him, Darce realized he was right. He began to calm himself down. And tried to gain better control of his breathing. And as he did the blue color faded from his eyes and bangs. As Varick witnessed this change in appearance he decided to look at his own reflection again. His eyes were once again back to its normal color and the highlights had faded from his hair. But his temperature, he noticed, was still noticeably high. "Ok" Varick said calmly as he took a seat on the ground. "Who do we tell about this? This isn't exactly something we can hide". Darce looked up at him, "Well, I'm not telling my family." he said quickly. A look of fear in his eyes. "Those people already think me and my brother are screw ups. I don't need them adding this to the list." Varick thought about what Darce had just said, "Yeah" he answered. "You're right. My dad tries to create the 'perfect family'." Varick mocked, as he used quotation marks. "He sees something like this and he'll probably disown me." Varick muttered regrettably. Both Varick and Darce's families weren't exactly the nicest bunch of people. Especially Darce's family. Darce's parents were the owners of this huge law firm. He had said their family had been in the law business since his great grandfather founded it. And Darces parents had this brilliant idea that they wanted all their children to follow in their footsteps and work there. Like it was some sort of creepy family dynasty they wanted to keep alive. And speaking of alive that was the very opposite of what the Grimm family was. The entire family wore fancy, dark clothing. The kind of clothing you would only see people wearing at a funeral. Mrs. Grimm went so far as to wear a dark violet dress, with a corset around the torso. And the family wasn't the kindest bunch of people either. Aside from Darce and his little brother the rest of the family was evil. The Grimm family always had a problem with the people Darce hung out with. They thought Varick was bad because he had a backbone. They thought Rae was too smart for her own good. And they especially didn't like Elizabeth because of her warm personality and her family. That and her father happened to work for them. "Who can we tell then?!" Varick asked, becoming impatient. There didn't really seem to be anyone they could tell except for Rae and Elizabeth. "What about Rae and Liz?" Varick finally suggested "I feel like we could tell them about this." Darce pondered on this for a moment. "Maybe" he finally answered, shrugging his shoulders. "But maybe we can tell them tomorrow. Right now we can't risk these....powers...getting triggered again. We should leave the school." he said finally. Varick nodded in agreement "Good idea. We can probably both act like we're sick, seeing as my head is still pretty warm. And you still look pale and clammy." Darce nodded at Varick's plan. And with that the two of them exited the science lab and made their way to the nurses office. Chapter 5: The Phoenix Both of the boys were allowed to go home. But that idea in itself had unplanned details. In order to fulfill the roles of being sick neither of them could walk home. And they both had to wait for their parents to pick them up from school. After about ten minutes of waiting in the office of the middle school, Mrs. Brenna finally showed up at the door. Followed by Mrs. Grimm, with her trademark glare. "You're father and I have better things to do then pick you up from school, Darcey." Mrs. Grimm hissed to her son. To be continued............. The event that had just occurred was shocking to say the least. How had fire spontaneously caught fire on the tile floors of the science lab? Even more peculiar, how had it stayed in a perfect circle around the four boys? And how was it that the fish tank spontaneously shattered the precise moment that peculiar fire had started. All Varick and Darce could do after that unprecedented event was stand there in shock. For some odd reason Varick´s head was suffering a pounding headache. He was so focused on his aching head that he failed to notice there was tears running down Darce´s face.
Finally when his headache was starting to recede, Varick turned around to look at Darce. Varick´s eyes widened at what he saw. Darce´s once black bangs as well as his eyes were now a light shade of blue. Darce was staring at Varick with the same amount of shock. ¨What?" Varick asked, a look of confusion replacing the look of shock. No words left Darce's mouth, all he could manage to do was shakily point at mirror on the wall. Turning to look at a mirror shock came rushing back to Varick´s face. His once completely blonde hair now had noticeable highlights of orange. There were blood red lines on his arms tracing where his veins are. And his eyes as well as the veins on his arms were beginning to leak blood. ¨What happened to us?" Varick asked quietly. Shock and fear still plastered upon his face. ¨Us?¨ Darce whispered to himself in confusion. Walking over to the mirror next to Varick, Darce saw his own reflection. His mouth fell open in shock as he stared at his own appearance. It took Varick a minute before an idea dawned on him. ¨Oh my god¨ he whispered "It was all us". Darce turned around, looking confused at what Varick had just whispered. "That fire that was started, the fish tank full of water. That trash can that caught on fire this morning. Darce, I think that was us.¨ Varick wheezed. Beginning to breathe more rapidly as he glanced at the blood leaking from his eyes. Glancing at a lab table Varick noticed a large stack of papers, it was time to test his idea. He quickly took a deep breath and turned his body toward the stack of papers. Varick began to trace his thoughts back to the fire. What had been going through his head before the fire had occurred? Anger, he soon realized. Jacob and Max had been teasing him. Calling him and his friends freaks and weirdos. Just the thought of their rude and hurtful comments was enough to set Varick off. He was pulled back to reality as the stack of paper was set ablaze. And as his anger receded so did the flame. He had started the fire. That's why his hair was orange and why his skin felt like it was burning. And Darce, he thought to himself. Darce was probably the one who destroyed the fish tank. That's why all those tears were running down the poor boy's face. "Darce" Varick finally said. "I want you to be sad, I want you to cry." Darce only looked at him with a furrow of his brow. "Think of what Max and Jacob had said. Think about every terrible thing they have said or done to you and our friends. Those words alone were enough to send Darce off the edge. Soon he was on the ground. Crying shakily and tears were running down his face. But soon the water that was on the floor formed a bubble around Darce, protecting him as he continued to cry. Varick looked in astonishment as the water continued to swirl around Darce. He tried to call out to Darce, but it appeared that the bubble eliminated sound from the outside. Channeling his anger once more, Varick cast a fireball upon the watery sphere. To be continued......... Chapter 4: The spontaneous flame
Sitting tall upon many of the lab tables was a paper mache volcano. The size of the volcano was unorthodox to say the least. And its color choices had the cooler hues of purple for the rock and turquoise for the lava. All of which were in thick uneven brush strokes. It was like someone put a young in child in charge of choosing the colors and painting this monstrosity. "Despite its color" Kevin began "This model is supposed to represent one of my favorite volcanoes, Mount St. Helens. The model before you elevates 8,366 inches, rather than in feet like the actual volcano. And if you press this button." Kevin said as he held up a remote. "It will cause the model to erupt with a homemade lava substitute." He with a smile. Kevin's explanation was only met with the wide eyed stares of children. The lab was engulfed in an awkward silence before Varick spoke up. "Uh, Kevin" he began, still wide eyed "How did you get that....thing in here?". There was a response of children's murmurs after Varick asked that question. It didn't take a scientist to know that Varick had addressed the elephant in the room. "Ah, that's quite an interesting story, little dude." Kevin said as he acknowledged the confusion of Varick and his classmates. "You see kid, I brought the supplies to make this beauty to the school. Then with the help of Mr. Lynns one of Ms. Hans' fellow teachers we assembled it here. Thank goodness for the labs large size or I would have had to assemble it in the gymnasium." Kevin said with a chuckle. As Kevin continued to speak his lecture was interrupted by an object hitting the back of Varick's head. Varick turned around to see Max and Jacob's obvious snickering. Both holding crumpled up pieces of paper in their hands. Simply shooting them a glare, Varick turned around and continued to listen to Kevin speak. And just as Varick was once again engulfed in concentration, another paper ball hit the back of his head. "Knock it off!" Varick whispered sharply to his two bullies. "Why don't you make us!" Jacob whispered back tauntingly. Laughter beginning to falter his once serious threat. As Kevin's lesson about the volcanoes concluded he led the group of children out of the science lab. And back to Ms. Hans' classroom. But only four people stayed behind from the group. Soon Jacob and Max were obnoxiously closing in on Varick and Darce. "Time to finish the mess you made for yourself on the bus, Blondie" Max taunted. Continuously throwing crumpled up balls of paper as he did. "Ow, hey!" Varick shouted as the paper balls flew at him all at once. "Why are you doing this?!" Varick asked incredulously "I didn't even do anything to you this morning. You're just being brain-dead like you always are." Varick commented as he pushed Max away from him. "You wanna know why I'm doing this?" Max asked, a snarl appearing on his lips. "Because you're a freak! And you hang out with freaks like him." Max said as he pointed at Darces emotionless face. "Y'know, you could have been like us" Max began "But instead you choose to hang out with a bunch of nerds, weirdos, and freaks. These hurtful comments stabbed Varick like knives. Making his anger continue to rise and his hands begin to shake. His head began to suffer a migraine as rage took over his mind. And just as he was about to respond to Max's hurtful remarks he was interrupted. Suddenly a flame circle began to form around the four boys, trapping them. The four of them could do nothing but just stand there helplessly. Letting terror and fear rise in their blood. It wasn't until a few seconds later the fish tank in the laboratory spontaneously shattered. Engulfing the floor in water and extinguishing the circular flame. The four of them stood there for a moment, all in awe at what had just occurred. "Let's get out of here!" Jacob yelled to Max. And without missing a second beat the two bullies sprinted out of the laboratory doors, leaving Darce and Varick alone. To be continued........ "What gave me away?" Kevin asked Sarah, a grin still on his face. "The thick californian accent, the hawaiian shirt, and the sandals." Sarah answered casually, giving a slight shrug as she did. "You're a smart kid, and yes I do enjoy surfing." Kevin admitted. "Anyways what are you dudes learning currently from old Ms.Hans?" Kevin asked. "I am not old Mr. Kevin" Ms. Hans commented sharply from her desk. "Right, sorry Ms. H" Kevin apologized, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. "Anyways what have you kids done to learn about science? What activities have you done lately?" Kevin asked.
There was a couple moments of silence before Varick decided to raise his hand. "Yeah, you, blondie" Kevin said, pointing at Varick. "We usually take notes and listen to Ms. Hans' lectures" Varick answered, attempting to stifle a yawn. A frown began to surface the tan mans face "Do you enjoy listening to the lectures and taking notes?" Kevin asked. The only response Kevin's question received was a few murmurs and shrugs from the students. "Okay, let me ask again. Raise your hand if you enjoy listening to lectures and taking notes. And be honest with me dudes." Kevin said hopefully. It took a few moments for Kevin to figure out that Sarah was the only one who enjoyed the lectures and note taking. "Okay" Kevin said slightly awkward "Raise your hand if you'd rather be doing a more enjoyable activity." And just like that the rest of the classes hands quickly shot up into the air. "Alright" Kevin said, a grin once again appearing on his face. "Guess I know what I'm working with. I'll give you two options for learning this week. If you're a dude that wants to do a more hands on activity you can come with me to the lab room. And if you want to stay here and listen to Ms, Hans' lecture by all means stay." Kevin said, still keeping a smile on his face. And just like that almost all of the students were following him to the lab room. The only one who actually wanted to stay behind was Sarah. Sarah looked up from the book she was currently reading. She made eye contact with Kevin, and Kevin looked back at her in a calculating way. As if the concept of her staying her to listen to a lecture boggled his mind. But after a minute he nodded his head at her and left. It was short, silent walk on the way to the science laboratory. As the children passed with every step they were only met with the empty, white walls of the school. There were no windows to shine light or any pictures to show signs of life ever inhabited it. Alan Rickus Middleschool never had a reputation for showing color or excitement. All that could be heard were the children's footsteps against the linoleum floors. "Man" Kevin commented in amazement "For a bunch of middle schoolers you dudes are quiet. The last school I student taught at had a class that was so loud and obnoxious they weren't allowed in the hallways." Kevin joked, chuckling awkwardly by himself. "Aw come on not even a chuckle?" Kevin said, a pleading smile appearing on his once smiling face. "You guys may be tougher than I thought." He said, sighing exasperatingly. "Anyways" he began, clearing his throat "I heard from old Ms. Hans that you dudes were learning about volcanoes. To me that sounds like a pretty righteous subject. So I thought it might be interesting to show you what volcanic eruption looks like with a more hands on experience.". This earned a few curious and confused looks from Varick, Darce, and the rest of the students. They followed Kevin as he opened the door to the otherwise bright and sterilized science lab. As they entered Darce and Varick were met with a sight that surprised them both greatly. To be continued....... After a very thorough lecture from Mr. Lynns about Apollo 13 it was time for the four friends to seperate. While Rae and Elizabeth went to math class with Ms. Lerry, Varick and Darce went to their least favorite class. It was not that hated hated Science class, they merely hated the teacher. Ms. Hans was one of the most boring teachers in the world. Her voice could make even the most interesting of activities seem boring. She had this habit of droning on while she talked, showing no emotion whatsoever while she spoke. Half the time the students in the class took the time to sleep or goof off while she lectured them. The only person who actually paid attention to her was Rae.
Varick and Darce were met with the same feeling of despair when they walked into Hans' classroom. The gloomy, gray classroom was the perfect match to her dull, stone-faced personality. Taking a seat in one of the back tables they waited for Hans to enter the classroom. A minute after they had found their seats Ms. Hans entered the room. She slowly waddled to her desk and took a seat to enter attendance on her computer. After several minutes of typing on her computer she stood up and walked over wipe board. "Class" she began in a bored tone "Today we-". But before she could finish her sentence there was a knock at the classroom door. With a sigh Hans waddled over to the door, slowly opening it with her chubby arm. Behind the door stood a person, it was young man with sandy-blonde hair and tan skin. His clothing choice was very unorthodox. He wore a blue hawaiian shirt, a black tie, and gray shorts. It looked like he going to a beach party rather than a school. "Hey" he said with a smile, he had a very thick californian accent when he spoke. "Are you Ms. Hans?" he asked. "Yes" Ms. Hans droned "Who are you supposed to be? Last time I checked the swimming pool was on the other side of the hall." The man at the door laughed at Hans' sarcasm "No dude, I'm the new student teacher. My professor called you didn't he?" He questioned. It took a moment before it Hans realized he was right. "Oh right" she responded, still in her bored tone. "Well, come in, I guess." she said, motioning him to enter the room. "Awesome" he said as he walked into the classroom, taking the second seat at the table Sarah was sitting at. "Class" Hans droned "Today starts the time we will have a student teacher joining us." Hans explained, not bothering to show any excitement. "Why don't you come up front and tell us about yourself, Mr....." Han's paused for a moment. "Uh, Kevin" the man at the desk answered. "Mr. Kevin" she noted "Well go ahead, come up front and tell us about yourself." Hans groaned, as though the idea sickened her. "Like, Ok" Kevin responded as he walked up to the front of the classroom. He stood there for a moment, looking around the classroom. It was silent for a moment, then Sarah decided to raise her hand. "Yeah, dudette?" he asked pointing at her. "Who are you?" Sarah asked. "My names Kevin" he introduced himself "Cool to meet you all. I'm gonna be helping Ms. Hans teach science for awhile. Once again Sarah raised her hand. "Yeah?" he questioned, pointing at her again. "Are you a surfer or something?" Sarah asked. "You ask a lot of questions little dudette" Kevin said with a smile "I love it. The world needs more people who ask questions." To be continued...... This week I thought it would be interesting to give my readers a break from the story and make a different short story.
Down that long track It was one of the last days of track practice, I could feel the summer sun beat on me as I continued to run. It was the end of the day, and the sun had began to set on the horizon. I could not help but feel nostalgia as I glimpsed at the red and pink sky. I could feel my heartbeat increasing as I found the homestretch of the track again and again. The feeling of finishing each lap was absolutely invigorating. I knew track was going to end soon, like all good things must. And if track ended I knew middle school was right behind it. Then it would be back to square one, I would soon leave another place behind. I would once again become a newbie in an unknown place, like a small fish entering a bigger pond. I continued to ponder as I ran that long track. I could hear the voices around me, I could hear the complaints of others that I had lapped them. But I was too involved in my thoughts to pay them my full attention. It would be weird, not being at the middle school anymore. I had been there for so long, I had walked those halls so many times. I had taken it for granted on so many occasions, now I would kill to be back there for another year. My thoughts continued to bounce from my running to the thought of my leaving. My heart rate continued to increase as reached the end of my laps. And prospect of being at the high school only made it beat faster. I had reached the end of my run, and I had reached the end of middle school years. All of that dawned on me as I stopped to catch my breath. That feeling of nostalgia made another appearance as I stared at the middle school. The windows becoming red and orange as the sun reflected off it. I had realized something in track. I figured out life was exactly like a race. Whenever life gets tough you need to just keep running. If life throws a hurdle at you, gather up all the strength you have and jump. You need to keep to running until you reach that great big finish line. Whether that line be the end of the day, the end of your middle school career, or even the end of your life. Do not slow down if you get tired, you need to reach deep inside and pull out everything you got. You need to finish strong. I still think about the memories I made on that track. And every time I see the middle school in the summer I can't help but shed a tear at what I learned. Middle school and track both made me realize that even when the going get tough, the tough get going. I needed to finish strong in my last days at the middle school, and so I did. And I as continue to run, I continue to think about how the sunset looked at the Horizon track. And how great it would be to be back there. Chapter 3: Apollo 13 The bus to Allan Rickus Middle school was always very hectic in the morning. The children clamored on about the homework filled day ahead of them. Some students were trying to finish the homework due today. And others were chatting along about how they were dreading the day ahead of them. Taking their usual back seats on the bus Darce, Elizabeth, Varick, and Rae began to find ways to pass the time. Being the bookworm she was Rae took out a book and began to read. Varick, who was sitting next to her attempted to get some more sleep on the bus. Just across the other seat Elizabeth was sitting cross legged and attempting meditation. And Darce was staring silently out the window of the bus seat. He never said a word, he just watched the world go by. The bus had stopped again, Rae let out a sigh of irritation as it stopped. The next stop was home to the three most annoying kids at the school. The bus door opened and first in was Max Jetters, followed by his two friends Jacob and Zeon. Max saw the four kids sitting at the back, grinning he slowly walked towards the seats in front of them. "Well" he said as he sat down "Look who we have here. The nerd, the loser, the loon, and the silent freak." he listed as he smiled arrogantly. "Go away, Max" Varick said tiredly. "I don't think so Brenna" Jacob said, flicking Varick's forehead is the process. "Not until you four move to the front of the bus. This is where we sit, you know that!". Rae straightened up as she heard this. "I think we'll pass on your aggressive suggestion" she retorted, not looking up from her book. "Whatchya reading there Rae?" Jacob asked, snatching the book from her hands. "Instructions on how to be nerd?" Max taunted as he flipped through the pages of the book. "Actually no" Rae responded calmly. "It's a chemistry book, you need to have at least three brain cells in your head to understand." Rae said, swiftly pushing up her glasses. Before the two boys could respond the bus stopped at the middle school. "We'll finish this later" Max said, walking away with Jacob and Zeon behind them. "Maxwell gives me such negative energy" Elizabeth commented calmly, her eyes still closed from meditation. First classes of the day was always a joy for the four children. The four of them had Mr. Lynns for a history teacher. Mr. Lynns was a complete nerd when it came to history, but his classes were far from boring. He always came up with memorable activities for his topics. When they were learning about the French Revolution he told everyone to research a famous event, person, or thing. Darce being the dark person he is chose to do a report on the guillotine. Or when they spoke about Egyptian history he made quite a few mummy related puns. "Good morning class" Mr. Lynns said as he walked in. "Hows my favorite bunch of students today?". Positive murmurs came from the classroom as he set his briefcase on his desk. "Let's get started shall we?" he said with a smile. "For all you space fanatics out there we are going t-" Mr. Lynns' introduction was interrupted by a knock on the door. He opened the door to find a blonde haired girl in a pink sweater. "Hey dad" she said "Ms. Kneezener sent me to give this to you" she said as she gave him a stack of paper. Mr. Lynns took the paper, his eyes lighting up as he read it. "Ah Jim Lovell's Apollo 13 interview, I've been waiting for Kneezener to print this out. Thank you Sarah". Mr Lynns turned to the class beaming "Students you remember you remember my daughter Sarah. She just as big a history nerd as I am." Mr. Lynns said proudly. "Hey guys" Sarah said waving at Darce, Varick, Rae, and Elizabeth. Along with being a complete history nerd, Mr. Lynns sought to teach his prodigy, his prodigy was his daughter Sarah Lynns. Sarah was nice person, she always hung out with Darce, Elizabeth, Varick, and Rae. Being the history nerd she was she got along with Rae the most. "Alright, well I probably shouldn't keep your class from learning. I'll be going." Sarah said as she waved at the four children. "Alright, thanks Sarah" Mr. Lynns said "I'll see you after school". And with that Sarah exited the classroom. "Alright" Mr. Lynns clapped "As I was saying, today we will learn about one of my favorite subjects Apollo 13." To be continued........
Varick, frustrated with his fathers endless enforcement of the rules, left for the bus stop in a huff. It had always annoyed him, the way his father and mother ran the house. And as he began to think about it more the more the veins in his head began to pop and his teeth began to clench. He continued to trail the side walk to the bus stop, passing a public trashcan on his way. He was pulled out his deep thoughts, however, when the trash can spontaneously caught on fire.
He stared at the flames for a moment in shock, how could a trashcan catch on fire all on its own? he thought. Looking around he saw no matches, no clouds to signify lightning, nothing. Dismissing the freakish burst of light Varick continued his path to the bus stop. When he got there he saw a three other children standing and talking. "Varick!" one of them screamed s they ran over to hug him. Taken back by the girls screaming Varick stood there in shock while the girl hugged him. "Oh, uh, hey Elizabeth". Elizabeth out of all of Varicks friends was always the most affectionate. And she constantly made people like her through that show of affection. "I sense tenseness in the upper back and shoulders." She said as she squeezed Varick a little tighter "What is troubling you?". Elizabeth's mother was a hippie who believed she could sense emotion. The ironic part was most of the time she was right. Having been the only girl in her family Elizabeth took on the same skill of reading people. It added more empathy to the affectionate person he already was. "Please Elizabeth" An annoyed voice said from behind "We've already been over this, you cannot sense emotions through hugs". Rae was the smart one of the group, no matter the problem or issue she could never go a minute without correcting someone on their mistake. The way people were able to tell was correcting someone was the way she pushed her glasses up in annoyance. "Rae why do you hate what you cannot calculate" Elizabeth said in a dreamy voice. That was another thing about Elizabeth, she was always so relaxed it was as if nothing in the world could bother her. "Because your hypothesis shows no evidence. It makes no sense. She said as she pinched her brown "Darce, Varick back me up here." Varick didn't say anything, not wanting to get involved in one of the many arguments Rae and Elizabeth had. "Just let Elizabeth do her thing Rae" Darce said simply. Then there was Darce, he was always the quite one of the group. In fact this was one of those rare days when he did say something. "See Darce thinks my powers are real!" Elizabeth said triumphantly. And as she made her point he went over to hug Darce, leaving Darce red in the face. As the bus rolled around the corner, Darce pointed at it silently. His arm shaking as he did. The bus rolled up to the bus stop and the four children boarded it. To be continued......... The pedestal began to glow brighter and brighter, emitting a colorful rainbow of white, red, blue, and green. It continued to glow until finally the top of the pedestal emitted four orbs into the air. Scattering the orbs into the night sky. Causing a silent explosion of light into the dark night sky. Yet the explosion remained unbeknownst to the townspeople.
The figure stood there for a moment, taking the opportunity to put their staff back into their cloak. Having known its work was done, they disappeared into the night. Leaving only the sound of its heels crunching on the leaf scattered ground. And the sight of their cloak becoming luminous in the moonlight. Chapter 2: Emotion through hugs The neighborhood on Webster Lane was like any other neighborhood you would expect. Children ran the streets playing their simple games. The mail carrier went about its normal route of delivering the mail, and cars continued to enter and exit the streets. On Webster Lane their lived normal people going about their hectic routines of the morning. And in that particular lane lived the Brenna Family. The Brenna family was just like any other family on Webster lane. Mr. Brenna was the owner of a car lot and Mrs. Brenna was an underappreciated Secretary at Grimm law firm. The two of them had two children, Varick and Nimmy. The Brenna family was the picture of nuclear family, and they constantly saw to it that they appeared respectable. "Tily, darling" Mr. Brenna called as he straightened his tie for the hundredth time. "Remember I'm working late tonight. The board of directors is giving me an inspection. I need to make sure my employees appear competent. Mrs. Brenna walking down the sitars of their house, entered the kitchen. She gave her husband a kiss before leaving. "Good luck on the inspection dear, and remember I'm working late at the office tonight." And with that she left through the font door, briefcase in hand. Varick, in a rush, made his way down the stairs. Nearly knocking his father over in the process. Mr. Brenna, straightening up, stood tall with authority and stared at his son. "Varick" he began "we have rules in this family. And one those rules is not to run in the house". Varick rolled his eyes "Yes, father" he responded in a bored tone. The Brenna house was always very strict when it came to enforcing the rules. But Mr. Brenna saw to it the most that the rules were obeyed. "Good" Mr. Brenna stated "Now you know the rules, after you get home I want you to take out the trash." He stated firmly. And with that Mr. Brenna left the house to go to work. With rules in the Brenna house there came penalties. The system was the penalty was dependent on the rule that was broken. A minor rule like running in the house and knocking someone over resulted in a minor penalty, in Varick's case it was taking out the trash. Whereas a more major break for example a broken window or sneaking out would result in paying for the break or doing all the chores in the house. Along with appearing perfect Mr and Mrs. Brennan complemented their perfection with strict rules. Frustrated with his father's endless enforcing of the rules, Varick left the house to walk to the bus stop. To be continued..... |
