The event that had just occurred was shocking to say the least. How had fire spontaneously caught fire on the tile floors of the science lab? Even more peculiar, how had it stayed in a perfect circle around the four boys? And how was it that the fish tank spontaneously shattered the precise moment that peculiar fire had started. All Varick and Darce could do after that unprecedented event was stand there in shock. For some odd reason Varick´s head was suffering a pounding headache. He was so focused on his aching head that he failed to notice there was tears running down Darce´s face.
Finally when his headache was starting to recede, Varick turned around to look at Darce. Varick´s eyes widened at what he saw. Darce´s once black bangs as well as his eyes were now a light shade of blue. Darce was staring at Varick with the same amount of shock. ¨What?" Varick asked, a look of confusion replacing the look of shock. No words left Darce's mouth, all he could manage to do was shakily point at mirror on the wall. Turning to look at a mirror shock came rushing back to Varick´s face. His once completely blonde hair now had noticeable highlights of orange. There were blood red lines on his arms tracing where his veins are. And his eyes as well as the veins on his arms were beginning to leak blood. ¨What happened to us?" Varick asked quietly. Shock and fear still plastered upon his face. ¨Us?¨ Darce whispered to himself in confusion. Walking over to the mirror next to Varick, Darce saw his own reflection. His mouth fell open in shock as he stared at his own appearance. It took Varick a minute before an idea dawned on him. ¨Oh my god¨ he whispered "It was all us". Darce turned around, looking confused at what Varick had just whispered. "That fire that was started, the fish tank full of water. That trash can that caught on fire this morning. Darce, I think that was us.¨ Varick wheezed. Beginning to breathe more rapidly as he glanced at the blood leaking from his eyes. Glancing at a lab table Varick noticed a large stack of papers, it was time to test his idea. He quickly took a deep breath and turned his body toward the stack of papers. Varick began to trace his thoughts back to the fire. What had been going through his head before the fire had occurred? Anger, he soon realized. Jacob and Max had been teasing him. Calling him and his friends freaks and weirdos. Just the thought of their rude and hurtful comments was enough to set Varick off. He was pulled back to reality as the stack of paper was set ablaze. And as his anger receded so did the flame. He had started the fire. That's why his hair was orange and why his skin felt like it was burning. And Darce, he thought to himself. Darce was probably the one who destroyed the fish tank. That's why all those tears were running down the poor boy's face. "Darce" Varick finally said. "I want you to be sad, I want you to cry." Darce only looked at him with a furrow of his brow. "Think of what Max and Jacob had said. Think about every terrible thing they have said or done to you and our friends. Those words alone were enough to send Darce off the edge. Soon he was on the ground. Crying shakily and tears were running down his face. But soon the water that was on the floor formed a bubble around Darce, protecting him as he continued to cry. Varick looked in astonishment as the water continued to swirl around Darce. He tried to call out to Darce, but it appeared that the bubble eliminated sound from the outside. Channeling his anger once more, Varick cast a fireball upon the watery sphere. Chapter 4: The spontaneous flame
Sitting tall upon many of the lab tables was a paper mache volcano. The size of the volcano was unorthodox to say the least. And its color choices had the cooler hues of purple for the rock and turquoise for the lava. All of which were in thick uneven brush strokes. It was like someone put a young in child in charge of choosing the colors and painting this monstrosity. "Despite its color" Kevin began "This model is supposed to represent one of my favorite volcanoes, Mount St. Helens. The model before you elevates 8,366 inches, rather than in feet like the actual volcano. And if you press this button." Kevin said as he held up a remote. "It will cause the model to erupt with a homemade lava substitute." He with a smile. Kevin's explanation was only met with the wide eyed stares of children. The lab was engulfed in an awkward silence before Varick spoke up. "Uh, Kevin" he began, still wide eyed "How did you get that....thing in here?". There was a response of children's murmurs after Varick asked that question. It didn't take a scientist to know that Varick had addressed the elephant in the room. "Ah, that's quite an interesting story, little dude." Kevin said as he acknowledged the confusion of Varick and his classmates. "You see kid, I brought the supplies to make this beauty to the school. Then with the help of Mr. Lynns one of Ms. Hans' fellow teachers we assembled it here. Thank goodness for the labs large size or I would have had to assemble it in the gymnasium." Kevin said with a chuckle. As Kevin continued to speak his lecture was interrupted by an object hitting the back of Varick's head. Varick turned around to see Max and Jacob's obvious snickering. Both holding crumpled up pieces of paper in their hands. Simply shooting them a glare, Varick turned around and continued to listen to Kevin speak. And just as Varick was once again engulfed in concentration, another paper ball hit the back of his head. "Knock it off!" Varick whispered sharply to his two bullies. "Why don't you make us!" Jacob whispered back tauntingly. Laughter beginning to falter his once serious threat. As Kevin's lesson about the volcanoes concluded he led the group of children out of the science lab. And back to Ms. Hans' classroom. But only four people stayed behind from the group. Soon Jacob and Max were obnoxiously closing in on Varick and Darce. "Time to finish the mess you made for yourself on the bus, Blondie" Max taunted. Continuously throwing crumpled up balls of paper as he did. "Ow, hey!" Varick shouted as the paper balls flew at him all at once. "Why are you doing this?!" Varick asked incredulously "I didn't even do anything to you this morning. You're just being brain-dead like you always are." Varick commented as he pushed Max away from him. "You wanna know why I'm doing this?" Max asked, a snarl appearing on his lips. "Because you're a freak! And you hang out with freaks like him." Max said as he pointed at Darces emotionless face. "Y'know, you could have been like us" Max began "But instead you choose to hang out with a bunch of nerds, weirdos, and freaks. These hurtful comments stabbed Varick like knives. Making his anger continue to rise and his hands begin to shake. His head began to suffer a migraine as rage took over his mind. And just as he was about to respond to Max's hurtful remarks he was interrupted. Suddenly a flame circle began to form around the four boys, trapping them. The four of them could do nothing but just stand there helplessly. Letting terror and fear rise in their blood. It wasn't until a few seconds later the fish tank in the laboratory spontaneously shattered. Engulfing the floor in water and extinguishing the circular flame. The four of them stood there for a moment, all in awe at what had just occurred. "Let's get out of here!" Jacob yelled to Max. And without missing a second beat the two bullies sprinted out of the laboratory doors, leaving Darce and Varick alone. To be continued........ |
