To his mother Darce had always been a disappointment. From the moment he was born Mrs. Grimm had never shown Darce that she cared about him even slightly. No matter how hard he tried to be who she wanted him to be it was never enough. At this point all he could do is let her scold him and pick himself up when he was gone. "Yeah, I know." Darce replied bitterly to his mother "I'm sorry mom." he said sadly.
"Varick" Mrs. Brenna began to her son. "Are you alright? You look very warm." She commented as she examined his face herself. Unlike his father, Varick's mother was more caring to her two children. And she did her best to make up for all the care Mr. Brenna could not give them. "I'm okay mom" Varick finally said "I just feel a little hot." he said, wiping the sweat from his forehead. Varick felt a pang of guilt in his chest, he didn't want to lie to his mother. One of few people who actually cared about him. But he didn't know what else to do. And lying seemed like the only sensible option. "Ok" Mrs. Brenna finally said, smiling caringly. "Well I'm here to take you home. Your father had to work late because of his employee inspection. Come on let's go to the car." She finally said, ushering him to the school's entrance. "Have a nice rest of your day Mrs. Grimm." Mrs. Brenna said just before exiting the school. "Hope Darce feels better." She wished. Mrs. Brenna's kind words only earned a sharp glare from Mrs. Grimm. "He'll be fine Mrs. Brenna." Mrs. Grimm said through gritted teeth. "You worry about caring for your own child." she coldly commented. Only to earn a concerned look from Mrs. Brenna as she exited the school. The Brenna's exited the school, leaving Darce alone with his mother. "Go to the car." Mrs. Grimm stated in a deep, venomous voice. Not wanting to make the woman any angrier, he did as she said. He walked slowly to the long, black, limousine. His mother ushering him in with the sharp flick of the wrist towards the one of the cars ajar doors. Darce sat uncomfortably on the black leather seats. His breathing becoming more and more rapid. His mother took the seat across from him, her signature glare still plastered on her face. "I had an important meeting today, Darcey." uttered Mrs. Grimm. Darce twitched at the mention of his full name. "Your father and I were finally going to have the father of that friend yours fired. But thanks to you I won't be able to witness his downfall." She added, her teeth becoming more and more gritted. She took an aggravated drag from the long cigarette in her hand. "When we get home I want you to go to your room and think about what you have done to me. I will call you down when dinner is ready. And then you will be able to speak about what you have done with both me and your father." She ended, taking another puff from the cigarette. "Do you understand me?" She added. Darce didn't say anything, which only set his mother off even more. "I said" she said quietly "do...you...understand...me!" She asked again, her voice raising higher. Darce finally nodded his head, only to get his mother to quiet down. A smirk spread across Mrs. Grimms face. A smirk that only appears when she knows she got her way. "Good" She hissed, taking a third puff from her cigarette. Darce couldn't decide if it was the thought of talking to both his parents. Or the smell of his mothers secondhand smoke that was making his stomach upset. After a few heated minutes the limo finally pulled into the driveway of Grimm manor. The Grimm family lived in a rather large mansion at the edge of town. The mansion looked as gothic and dead as the family that lived in it. The manor had a decorative, black, steel fence that wrapped around its grounds. To prevent any intruders the fence had an access code that only few people knew. His parents had so little trust that not even Darce knew the code. And on inside the fence was a large, beautiful, garden. With well-kept topiaries and colorful flowers scattered about the grounds. The garden was kept in this perfect condition by the Grimm's gardener Victor Manolo. He was one the few people who had access to the fence around the Grimm family's estate. Manolo was a tall, thin, man. Who had pale skin despite his constant exposure to the sun. He had gray, thinning hair that was usually covered by a sunhat. Manolo was one of the few people at the manor Darce that could actually stand. Darce had grown fond of the man's interest in the Grimm family garden. When the rest of his family was busy at the manor doing who knows what. Darce would usually be out in the garden talking to him. Letting Manolo share his knowledge of plants with him. "Hello there, Darce." Manolo greeted as Darce walked towards the door of the mansion. Only for his greeting to be returned by Darce's polite, yet sad wave back. "Hello to you too, Mrs. Grimm." Manolo added with a smile. "Just do the gardening, Manolo!" Mrs. Grimm snapped, slamming the door in anger. To be continued.........
